Dresden Files Reread - Fool Moon Chapter 6

It was Murphy sneaking up on Harry, and she's none too happy that he went off and followed a lead without her, although she seems to accept his (vague) explanation of why he couldn't wait. For her part, she tailed Terra's car.

Murphy wants to head up to the roof, since they didn't go out the back either, and she wants to put out an APB on the kids. Harry has two objections. First, he doesn't think they're the killers, and has to remind Murphy that while the tracking spell places Terra at the scene of Spike's murder, it doesn't actually mean she did it. This shouldn't on its own preclude bringing them in for questioning, but if they start arresting werewolves, it's gonna be taken as an act of aggression against the whole pack - not something to be entered into lightly. This is the first hint we get of broader norms within the supernatural community (by his own account, Harry doesn't know much about werewolves, so his confidence about their reaction is plainly based in knowledge of how these things work in general, and that those rules are pervasive enough to be applicable here), rather than just within the white council and in its relations to the vampires and to regular mortals, as are established in the previous book.

He also reminds Murphy that wolves can be incredibly dangerous to humans, although some of his specifics are skewed or exaggerated. I am tolerably certain that wolves cannot see in infrared, and for some reason he makes no mention of their sense of smell, which is rather more relevant to their ability to fight you in the dark than any ability to "see your body heat." His actual point however, that Terra could have killed him super dead had she been so inclined, and she chose not to, even after he hit her, is legitimate; she showed a degree of self-restraint that seems at odds with the brutality of Spike's murder, and Murphy reluctantly agrees to hold off on the APB, provided Harry gets her the werewolf research on time.

Short post because short chapter. If all goes well, expect to see a new Advice Column by the end of this month. Until then, be Gay, do Crimes, and read all the things!
